About

Hi my name is Dennis, A.K.A. Canoehound

Back in 1984 I had my first real backcountry canoe trip experience up near Temagami Ontario with a buddy. It was a weekend excursion that did not go so well. An old rented heavy aluminum canoe that leaked, bad weather, overloaded with heavy gear and coolers, blackflies and mosquitoes that you could cut through with a knife, no water filtration and oh yea, did I mention an old boy scout pup tent that my feet stuck out the end of… do you remember them? Well, I was hooked, I fell in love with canoe tripping and since that first canoeing adventure I have not missed a year.

My trips have come a long way since then. Improvements with better gear, lighter weight canoes, longer trips in far and remote areas of Ontario, and the addition of a few great canoe partners, My passion for canoeing and the backcountry grows every single day. Not a minute goes by that I am not thinking about being in the backcountry.

I am blessed with a Loving Wife of over 30 years, 2 Fantastic Daughters, a Son-in law and most recently the addition of a Grandson who I will be introducing to canoeing and camping this year. Let’s not forget about the real star of the show Mollie, our 7 year old Springer Spaniel. You could not ask for a better canoeing companion and loyal friend.

Over the years I have been fortunate enough to paddle some pretty remote and fascinating canoe routes in Algonquin, Killarney, Temagami, Missinaibi, Spanish River, Grassy River, Kawartha, Muskoka, Quetico and Algoma just to mention a few… You should see the rest of my bucket list… so many routes and places and not enough time.

I guess I should also mention my passion for hiking and bushcraft. Bushcraft in my opinion goes hand in hand with canoeing and hiking. I utilize my bushcraft skills each and everyday I am in the backcountry. I also enjoy cooking in the backcountry. Watch any of my tripping videos and you will see that eating great food while tripping is very important to me. Mmmm.

Over the past few years I have kickstarted my YouTube channel called Canoehound Adventures. My way of documenting and sharing my adventures with my Family, Friends and of course anyone who would like to watch. In 2020 I started a weekly series on my YouTube channel named Canoehound’s Outdoor Adventure Show that allows me to help bring the outdoors community together by bringing them topics and personalities related to the outdoors and the backcountry. I enjoy promoting the great outdoors and I believe everyone has the right to get out and enjoy all that nature has to offer. I’m having a lot of fun with this and I feel it is starting to make a difference… I love my subscribers and interacting with them online or in person.

Thanks for wanting to know a bit more about me… there is a lot more but we will save that for another day.
